When you’re a business owner, you’re required to wear a bunch of hats. With that in mind, there are important things that you need to keep in checks, such as your finances and taxes.

If you’re starting a new business, one of the things you’re probably worried about is your taxes. When it comes to VAT, you’d be happy to know that if your business is new, you might not need to register for VAT just yet—but that’s only if you meet certain criteria.

Being tax-efficient is key to having smooth and responsible business operations. In that regard, many business owners work with small business accounting services to ensure all their finances and taxes are in check to ensure that all deadlines are met.

If you’re curious about VAT and you want to voluntarily register your business for it, keep reading. We’ve prepared a quick guide that explains how to register for VAT — when you need to do it, and how to complete the whole process. Let’s take a look!

When Should I Register My Business For VAT?

Typically, a business should register for VAT once their VAT taxable business turnover reaches the VAT registration threshold in 12 months. With that being said, the VAT registration threshold for 2021 is £85,000.

What is VAT Taxable Turnover and VAT Exempt?

A VAT taxable turnover is a total amount of what you have sold that is not exempt from tax. In that regard, VAT exemption is when the goods and services you have incurred or provided are essential, such as investments, insurance, medical procedures, and training.

However, you may notice that some VAT exempt items are “out of scope;” this means they are outside the scope of VAT rules. But even so, you’ll still need to record this transaction in your bookkeeping, even when they’re exempt from VAT.

How Do I Register for VAT?

You should know that you can register for VAT through your accountant. Professional accountants are authorised to register your business for VAT on your behalf; all they need to do is complete the 64-8 form to get authorisation.

If you don’t have an accountant, you can easily register your business for VAT online. You just need to create a VAT online account or Government Gateway to enter the registration process. Of course, you need to have the right documents in hand, such as your business registration details, bank account details, and National insurance number.

Another way to register for VAT is by registering by post. With this method, you need to fill out a form and send it to the HMRC post.

After registration, you should receive a VAT certificate within 30 working days, but note that it’s pretty standard that the process may take a bit longer. For this reason, it’s best to plan ahead and work with a reliable small business accountant to ensure that all documents and requirements are in place for hassle-free registration.

The Bottom Line: Work With a Credible Accountant To Help Your With Your VAT Registration

There’s no doubt that taxes are a tricky thing, and with that being said, VAT registration can also seem a bit overwhelming for most. Because of this, it’s best to have a small business accountant help you with this task to eliminate the complexities and delays and to ensure that your business is VAT registered in no time.
